The Toyota GR010 Hybrid under the microscope: A Hypercar born to win Le Mans

Hypercars in Focus | The Toyota GR010 Hybrid, which has been competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2021, is the oldest prototype still competing in the premier class. After two consecutive defeats in 2023 and 2024, Toyota wants to reclaim the kingdom that was its only recently. To succeed in this challenge, having a cutting-edge car is essential. How can the Japanese prototype make a difference?

The GR010 Hybrid has not yet won the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC this year, but it should not be forgotten that it has always stood out at Le Mans, a track that suits it perfectly .

A rank to hold

Toyota is a respected manufacturer in the automotive world. The name is synonymous with reliability, discipline, and resilience. Qualities that translate perfectly to a demanding event like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which the Japanese entered for the first time 40 years ago. After years of struggle and misfortune, Toyota finally managed to triumph at the Le Mans classic in 2018. Undefeated until 2022, thanks to these five consecutive victories, it enjoys the status of favorite, regardless of the drivers on board or the opponents. Since 2023, however, the competition has been fiercer than ever . Ferrari won the last two editions, but Toyota remained in ambush with two second-place finishes.

Even though this is its fifth year of operation, the car that won in 2021 and 2022 is still very sharp. For its development, Toyota was inspired by the GR Super Sport Concept prototype , presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2018, which makes it easy to identify with the brand's philosophy. The task was far from easy, as it had to succeed the famous TS050, one of the most successful cars in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and victorious from 2018 to 2020. This intuition has paid off, particularly in terms of aerodynamics, where it holds its own against more recent prototypes.

The optics changed in 2023, but Toyota has reverted to the previous version since early 2024. This is one of the only visible changes made in recent years to the GR010 Hybrid.

This is why the 2025 model is essentially the same as the one unveiled in 2021, even if small adjustments have been made over time. The main updates concern reliability and practicality: nothing detectable to the naked eye . Up close, the GR010 Hybrid stands out quite significantly from its rivals due to its sidepods (see photos) and its high rear diffuser. The work on the angles is quite striking, and perhaps even more so in its anniversary version. Indeed, the #7 Toyota sports historic colors, which the GT-One wore during the 1998 edition of the 24 Hours . A livery that delights fans while strengthening the brand's identity.
